This design-build project consisted of a new 20,000 SF freestanding three-story addition to the existing navy lodge. The addition is immediately adjacent to the existing facility and connected at each level by a covered walkway. The addition included 36 new guest rooms, vending space, maid storage, and a maintenance office. Each guest room offers a prefab kitchen unit for light food preparation and a private balcony on the beach side with ocean views. Also included was expansion of the in-house laundry facility, expansion of the existing guest laundry facilities, and converting the existing facilities from electric to gas.
The lodge is located just behind the sand dunes, bordering the Atlantic Ocean south of the St. John’s River entrance and northeast of Jacksonville. As a result, the structure has strip footings and stem walls on three sides set to a depth necessary to resist storm induced scour of the dunes. The structural system is load-bearing masonry with a conventional slab on grade. The elevated decks is precast hollow core slabs with a concrete topping. The roof is a standing seam metal on light gauge trusses. The exterior skin is CMU with synthetic stucco with the color scheme matching the existing facility.
