University of Florida Health 10th Floor Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Renovation

This 10-month project involved the complete demolition of over 17,800 SF of office space and converting that space into a 24 bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). There are 24 private rooms, grouped in pairs, so that each nurse can look after two patients from a centrally located work area adjacent to the rooms.

The paired rooms are connected by a sliding glass door that allows privacy when needed but also allows for immediate travel between the two rooms. The doors from the rooms to the main corridors are 8’ breakaway sliding glass doors. The layout has smooth curves and an abundance of overhead soffits concealing indirect lighting.

The flooring patterns reflect the ceiling and soffit patterns. Open spaces for conference areas and lounge areas are found throughout the floor. Also included is a suite for patient families including kitchen and bath facilities, conference rooms, three “on call” sleeping quarters with bath facilities, a pharmacy and other amenities that make for a state-of-the-art PICU.
