North Port breaks ground on new emergency operations center
North Port city officials gathered Thursday to mark a significant milestone in the city’s emergency preparedness efforts, breaking ground on a new $13.8 million Emergency Operations Center near an accompanying fire station that just broke ground last week. The 16,000 square-foot facility, located adjacent to North Port City Hall, represents a major investment in the city’s disaster response capabilities and reflects lessons learned from recent hurricanes. It is expected to be fully completed by June, 2027.
“It’s going to be a safe place for our responders first of all,” said Stacy Aloisio, Emergency Manager for the City of North Port. “We’ll be able to have 24/7 operations so there is continuity with our mission essential functions after disaster, so search and rescue, debris, we’ll be able to coordinate all of those, and even when the power is out in the city we’ll still have power and communications here.”
The new facility marks a dramatic upgrade from the city’s current emergency operations setup, which has been housed in a second-floor conference room at City Hall. This cramped arrangement has made it difficult to attract personnel during emergencies and has limited the capacity for coordinated response efforts.
