Jail Annex Rising in the Heat

The 100-bed annex to the Highlands County Jail should be completed by next summer, Sheriff Paul Blackman said.
Once inmates are moved into the annex, it should relieve occasional overcrowding and allow workers to modernize aging parts of the jail. Of the 521 inmates now housed at the jail, 89 are females, Blackman said. They would be the first to be housed in the annex once it’s complete.
“I will be glad to see the numbers go down (in the present jail),” Blackman said at the December groundbreaking. “We’re overcrowded so that the 100 beds will get us back to where we have a normal bed count.”
