Demolition of Northwood Center underway for new Tallahassee police headquarters

In the place of the strip mall building that once signaled Florida’s capital was moving toward the modern age, a new, state-of-the-art police headquarters will begin to rise from the pavement lot dominating the corners of Tharpe Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Clearing the roughly 514,000 square foot square-foot building is an arduous task that has to take into account toxic materials used in construction and renovations and recycling efforts that are being done, for the moment, out of sight.
“It is an inside-out process,” said John Powell, the city of Tallahassee project manager for the building of the future home of the Tallahassee Police Department’s headquarters, “There’s a lot of activity going on inside the building as we speak.”
