Ajax Building Corporation Wins Project of Year from ABC North Florida Chapter
Two additional projects win Eagle Awards for Excellence in Construction
Ajax Building Corporation has won the prestigious Project of the Year Award from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) North Florida Chapter for construction of the Sarasota County Emergency Operations Center. The $15.3 million facility was completed by Ajax/Tandem Construction, a Joint-Venture, last February.
Ajax also picked up two additional Eagle Awards for projects in Melbourne and Gainesville.
The competition is conducted every other year to recognize quality and innovation in construction and is the only one of its kind in northwest Florida. Independent industry experts judge the submissions on presentation, unique and notable characteristics and safety.
Project of the Year: Sarasota County Emergency Operations Center, Sarasota
Category: Commercial $10 million to $20 million
This two-story, 40,000 square-foot, $15.3 million project is the daily Public Safety Communication Center with 911 dispatch services for fire departments and law enforcement. It is also the county’s disaster nerve center, built to withstand a Category 5 hurricane and operate on generators and backup systems for 72 hours without outside intervention. The facility was completed by Ajax/Tandem Construction, a Joint-Venture, in February 2015 and is seeking LEED Silver certification.
Eagle Award: Eastern Florida State College Public Safety Institute, Melbourne
Category: Institutional over $10 million
This $12.9 million, 67,000 square-foot facility was built in 12 months and completed in January 2015. It consolidates all academic instruction for the Public Safety program and houses offices of the college president. In addition to classrooms, labs and support services, specialized spaces include tactical training, weight rooms and mock courtrooms. The Institute’s façade showcases the new brand of buildings on the college’s growing flagship campus.
Eagle Award: University of Florida Healthcare Entry Atrium, Gainesville
Category: Healthcare less than $10 million
The $9.2 million University of Florida Health East Entry Façade and Sebastian Ferrero Atrium project was completed in July 2014. The project included the attachment of a two-layered structural steel framework on the exterior of the occupied 12-story north tower at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. Attached to this framework are multi-colored stainless steel woven mesh fabric panels imported from Germany. The project also included interior demolition and renovation of the existing 8,000 SF east entry lobby into the Sebastian Ferrero Atrium.
