Ajax Building Corporation Earns 4th Safety, Health Renewal From OSHA and USF SafetyFlorida – Press Release
Ajax Building Corporation has received a SHARP award from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and USF SafetyFlorida. This is the fourth time the commercial building construction management company has earned the SHARP recognition, which is given to small to medium-sized employers with exemplary safety and health management practices.
Based in Midway, Florida, and with offices throughout the Southeast, Ajax has 126 employees. The company also has a long-standing working relationship with USF SafetyFlorida. In 2005, Ajax requested its first on-site consultation for its headquarters and since then has used the program’s safety and health services at jobsites throughout the state.
Ajax Safety Director Marc Reeves said USF SafetyFlorida has assisted the company with reducing injuries and worksite hazards as well as providing “greater employee and supervisor understanding of effective workplace health and safety practices.”
Since being in the SHARP program, Reeves said the company has improved its overall safety and health management practices and reduced its injuries and worksite hazards.
USF Safety and Health Consultant Mike Tartal said the management and employees of Ajax are well ahead of other construction companies when it comes to effective safety and health management practices. Its safety performance metrics prove it: the company’s Total Recordable Case (TRC) rate has dropped in two years from 1.5 to 0.77. Furthermore, its experience modifier rate has been reduced from 1.10 to .84, resulting in a cost savings in workers’ compensation premiums. In today’s economic climate, prioritizing safety and health as part of your business culture can reap financial rewards.
OSHA’s SHARP award is given to small businesses with less than 500 employees that demonstrate exemplary workplace safety and health practices. USF SafetyFlorida recommends employers to OSHA that meet SHARP criteria. To qualify, the employer must request an on-site consultation, involve employees in workplace safety and health, correct any hazards identified during the consultation process, and maintain an injury and illness rate lower than its industry average.
