Our Safety 360° Approach
Every Ajax employee receives regular safety training from our dedicated Safety Department that includes role plays of scenarios tailored to specific work environments, lessons-learned discussions, new best practices and leadership training so that every employee is engaged and empowered to be a voice for safety. We expect continuous growth and innovation from our teams, which range from adopting new technologies to testing cutting-edge emergency and safety measures.
In turn, our investment in safety benefits our clients who avoid safety-related impacts to their projects and rest assured of their staff and visitors’ safety—everybody, everywhere, every day.
- Project Hazard Analysis: Before work begins, our safety director will review the contract documents with the project team to identify potentially hazardous tasks, conditions, materials, or special training required to perform the task. Additionally, environmental controls shall be put in place to control air quality. Daily clean-up and housekeeping will also be a priority.
- Pre-task Planning: This is a specific task analysis by our Superintendents. They will discuss with the crew the hazards anticipated with the tasks, equipment needed to perform their job safely, and personal protective equipment to be worn.
- Safety Orientation and Training: All new employees are required to go through our safety orientation program prior to starting work and all employees are given more specific training for complex or technical jobs.
- Drug and Alcohol Abuse Program: Our drug and alcohol abuse program includes pre-employment screening, random testing and post-accident testing. We also give extra consideration to subcontractors who have a similar policy in effect. We will also conduct background checks on all construction workers to ensure they have no issues that would prevent them from working near an occupied school campus or mall.
These are just a few of the ways we work to ensure the safety of all personnel on our jobs.
Yes, we do invite OSHA to visit our projects! Knowledge of workplace hazards and ways to eliminate them can only improve the overall operations of a company. Ajax works in partnership with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Consultation Services at the University of South Florida as well as a full-time safety team to help identify and correct hazardous conditions on our projects. For more information on the OSHA consultation service please visit USF Safety Florida or OSHA.
Safety Culture
Upon joining Ajax, new staff attend Safety 360° training to learn about our safety culture of care and engagement. We also work with our clients to make sure they understand and play a role in this culture of safety. Our strong Safety 360° culture—which includes sharing email reminders, safety moments, safety stories, and lessons learned—resolutely supports our efforts to protect our staff, our workers, and the public.

Safety 360° Philosophy
Awareness
The program fosters a 360-degree view of safety, physically and philosophically. We expect active engagement from all employees in their immediate environment, as well as awareness of what’s happening above, below, and next to them. It also means that we look out for one another’s physical and mental safety, speak up about potential safety issues, and are as invested in safety as our safety staff.
Behavior
Behavior is the primary contributing cause of over 80% of accidents. With that in mind, the primary goal of our Safety 360° approach is to avoid risky behaviors altogether. Through behavior-based safety “coaching,” we are helping staff take a more active role in supporting a strong safety culture that solicits feedback, engages the workforce, and empowers people to make a difference.
Positivity
Safety 360° relies on positive reinforcement to inspire project teams and employees at all levels to achieve the highest level of safety. Company leaders set the example by discussing safety with their teams on a regular basis, walking through project sites, holding principals’ meetings with subcontractors, and hosting five-worker lunches. The program also recognizes projects, teams, and individuals for exemplary safety performance. Regular feedback, engagement, and coaching are at the program’s core and drive Ajax’s efforts to foster a lasting and positive safety culture across the organization.
Shared Responsibility
Each and every employee receives annual safety coaching. We believe that the best way to increase accountability is to increase responsibility, so our superintendents, project managers, and others are as engaged in safety as our dedicated Safety Department team members.
