LOCATION: Punta Gorda, Florida
OWNER: Charlotte County Public Schools
BUDGET: $34,000,000
ARCHITECT: Harvard Jolly
COMPLETION DATE: Phase I Site: September 2007 Phase II Building: May 2008

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: “Punta Gorda Middle School was a replacement school project after the Hurricane Charley disaster in 2004. The project was built to house the students who had been located in modular trailers since the hurricane hit and also to provide for the future growth of Charlotte County of up to 1,274 students.

The project consisted of approximately 172,000 square feet of four connected buildings including a two and a three story administration / classroom buildings, a cafetorium and a gymnasium. The sitework construction included utilites, parking lot, bus loop and recreational fields. It required coordination with many local agencies such as Charlotte Public Works, Southwest Florida Water Management, and City of Punta Gorda to address the massive utility and adjacent road improvements.

In May 2009, Punta Gorda Middle School became the first middle school in Florida to receive LEED Silver certification.
