Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Opens New Jail Housing Tower

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office held a ribbon cutting last Friday for the recently completed Adult Detention Center expansion project with Studio 8 Design and Croft & Associates.

Cherokee County is one of the fastest growing counties not only in Georgia, but in the nation. The 225,000 SF Cherokee County Adult Detention Center facilities were completed in 2002, but an expansion was required to keep up with the County’s growing needs. This project provided an additional 110,915 SF as well as renovations.

The expansion became a 583-bed housing tower consisting of precast concrete modular cells with structural precast walls and floors, load bearing CMU, and elevated cast-in-place concrete with 21 dayrooms specially designed for indirect supervision from elevated control towers and 3 exercise yards. Also, the access roadway around the new and existing facilities was extended. Renovations also took place in the kitchen, staff dining area, laundry, visitation area, lobby and the master control.

In the existing kitchen and staff dining area, the equipment was cleaned and new equipment was added, essentially doubling what existed previously. Epoxy flooring was installed throughout the kitchen, new finishes including paint and an acoustical ceiling, new electrical outlets to service the added food service equipment, new lighting, new HVAC system including a secondary exhaust hood complete with ANSUL fire suppression, and new flooring, paint, ceiling and light fixtures in the Staff Dining Area.

There was a complete replacement of the previous security system and upgraded the video visitation system by replacing analog cameras with HD digital cameras. Along with said upgrade of their system, Ajax remodeled and completed an addition at the existing visitation area. This addition added bathrooms and a front desk area to the space, enclosed an existing elevator shaft and some existing windows and added an additional exit walkway. Improvements of the entire space included flooring, paint, ceilings, light fixtures, etc.
