PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) Westview K-8 School Project is a 172,000 square foot masonry structure housing classrooms for Kindergarten thru 8th grade. The project was built on a 48 acre “green field” site and had a very aggressive 18 month schedule, including site clearing, extending utility services onto the site, storm water piping and storm water retention pond development, in addition to the school buildings. The brick and stucco buildings consist of 3 two-story classroom wings, 1 one-story autistic wing, a separate EMH classroom wing, gymnasium, kitchen & cafetorium, and full administration, science labs, and media areas tying it all together. Westview boasts 3 science labs, 2 art suites, several computer and skills labs, band and chorus rooms, and a full track, football and athletic fields.

This was a very detailed project with many different types of space requirements. 100% of the construction labor and materials was competitively bid as part of 50 separate bid packages and purchase orders. Duval County employs a WMBE program and this project had a goal of 20%. The project team worked diligently with subcontractors and vendors to attain 30% participation of local certified WMBE subs and vendors. We also beat our targeted goal for tax savings by over $140,000 for a grand total of over $470,000.

Part of the building is EHPA “hurricane hardened” (Enhanced hurricane protection area) and is prepared to serve as a hurricane shelter. There is a 600 KVA Generator, a potable well that can serve potable water, and sanitary holding tanks, that can be used during a loss of utility service.
