PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The New Classroom Building at St. Jude Cathedral School is a 32,000 SF two story masonry building that serves grades Pre K through 8.
Features of the project, which was designed by Portela & Associates, include restrooms in every classroom so that students do not have to leave the supervised classrooms to travel back and forth to the restroom, a common area connecting the three Pre-K classrooms featuring a pyramidal skylight, and modern telephone and computer systems in every classroom.
Upon completion of the construction of the new classroom building, one of the old classroom buildings, as well as the old convent building was demolished to make way for a new covered aluminum walkway.Prior to demolition of the convent, the original steel cross installed in the 1950s was removed and refinished by Ajax Building Corporation and was then installed on the south wall of the new classroom building, symbolically bringing something from the original building to the new building. Future plans, as funding permits, include construction of additional classroom and office space as well as a new gymnasium.
