PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This project is the third of five phases of the campus reconstruction. This phase replaces the remaining buildings damage by Hurricane Charley and later demolished. The new construction connects all remaining buildings into a cohesive single building with interior corridors, replacing the original 1926 - era campus style buildings. New construction is 236,000 SF and existing is 148,000 SF. The new area includes classroom wings for 9th and & 10th grades, a media and technology building, additions for the arts and physical education departments, and a multi-purpose room to replace the original 1926 - era auditorium damaged by the storm. Four of the five existing buildings will remain with minor upgrades, primarily to mechanical, electrical and fire protection systems. These four buildings will remain as original construction type and occupancy. The three-story is an existing building and is historical, and is being structurally reconstructed.
On August 13, 2004, Hurricane Charley damaged six schools including Punta Gorda Middle School and Charlotte High School. These six schools represented thirty percent of all Charlotte County's Public Schools. No other school district statewide or nationally had ever experienced such loss and damage due to a natural disaster. The schools lost their familiar, well worn buildings that had been used by generations of Charlotte County children and families. This school that was completely lost in those August winds will rise again from the rubble and reawaken as a magnificent and enduring structure. The school is dedicated to the countless numbers of caring people and organizations who gave tirelessly to the recovery efforts and to the students who inspired us to build anew so they could have a school to call their own.
